Episode 6: 5 Things I Wish My OB Told Me Before Trying to Conceive

Episode 6: 5 Things I Wish My OB Told Me Before Trying to Conceive

When I first decided to start trying for a baby, I thought it would be simple: track my cycle, follow the advice my OB gave me (“just try for a year”), and wait for the magic to happen.

But as the months went by, I realized no one had given me a real roadmap. I was left Googling late at night, piecing together information, and wondering why something that seemed so natural suddenly felt so complicated.

If you’re in that space right now—confused, overwhelmed, or just wishing someone had handed you a manual—you’re not alone. Today, I’m sharing five things I wish my OB had told me before I started my TTC (trying to conceive) journey.

1. Age matters—but it’s not the whole story

We’ve all heard the warnings about fertility and age. Yes, egg quality does decline over time, but it’s not like your fertility falls off a cliff the day you turn 35. Everyone’s timeline is different. Knowing your numbers—through simple labs—can give you clarity without adding unnecessary panic.

2. Ovulation isn’t guaranteed—even if your period is regular

A regular cycle doesn’t always mean ovulation is happening. You can bleed every month and still not release an egg. This is why tracking ovulation (beyond just counting cycle days) can be so powerful. Tools like basal body temperature (BBT) charting, ovulation predictor kits, and even cervical mucus tracking can help you understand what’s really happening.

3. You don’t have to wait a full year to ask for labs

This one is huge. Many OBs tell patients to “try for 12 months” before running any tests—but you are allowed to advocate for yourself sooner. Basic labs like AMH (for ovarian reserve), TSH (thyroid), Vitamin D, and a semen analysis can give you important insights right away. And early information can save you months—or years—of frustration.

4. OBs aren’t fertility specialists (and that’s okay!)

Your OB-GYN is incredible at pregnancy care, delivery, and women’s health, but not all OBs are trained deeply in reproductive endocrinology. If something feels off, or if you want more specialized guidance, it’s okay to ask for a referral to a fertility clinic—or even work with a fertility coach who can help you bridge the gap and advocate for your needs.

5. It’s okay to want clarity—before you feel “infertile”

So many people think they have to wait until something is “wrong” before seeking support. That’s not true. Being proactive doesn’t make you paranoid—it makes you empowered. Wanting answers early in your journey doesn’t mean you’re broken. It means you’re listening to your body.

Real Talk Coaching Moment 💛

When I work with clients in my fertility coaching program, we start with the questions no one else is asking:

  • How does your cycle actually look?
  • Where do you feel the most confused or unheard?
  • What information would help you feel more in control?

Because no one wins a prize for waiting in silence. You are allowed to ask questions, get curious, and begin this journey with your eyes wide open.

My Story: Why This Matters

I once worked with a client who had been “just trying” for almost a year. Her OB kept telling her to give it time. But when we finally looked at her labs, we discovered signs of PCOS that had never been addressed. She told me, “I didn’t even know I could ask for more.”

That’s the heart of this post: you can ask for more. You do deserve clarity. And the sooner you feel empowered to speak up, the smoother your journey can be.
